Fearrington Clubs & Activities
 

Dozens of clubs and groups sponsor village-wide activities at Fearrington every day of the year. We would be happy to tell you more about their goals and activities, or put you in touch with a current member. The information provided below is just a sampling from the extensive roster of active groups. If you have an interest that is not represented below, feel free to email us and we will let you know if there is a group that shares your interest here at Fearrington.

Amateur Birders
Whether you're an experienced bird watcher or just a bird enthusiast, you will enjoy this outdoorsy group. During the year they explore various Fearrington locations as well as some "off campus" areas to find different species of birds. The only prerequisites for this group are an appreciation for feathered friends and a pair of binoculars.
When: Fridays at 8am from Oct 1st - April 30th and at 7:30am May 1st - September 30th, at the Smokehouse kiosk.

Book Club
This informal group of book lovers gets together every two weeks to spend the afternoon discussing various books selected by the group in one of the members' homes. The group contains approximately 20 members who meet year-round with the exception of July.
When: Every second Wednesday at 2pm.


Great Decisions Discussion Group
Great Decisions is a foreign affairs discussion group run by residents of Fearrington Village. The organization hosts nine events each year, which are open to the public, to discuss topics based on the The Foreign Policy Association's annual discussion program. Speakers come from local universities and communities, including several distinguished residents of Fearrington. When: Second Thursdays, September-May.

Program in the Humanities and Human Values
The Program in the Humanities and Human Values, a unit of the College of Science and Arts, sponsors public programs which draw on the humanities to nurture a deeper understanding of our history culture, enrich the life of the mind, and contribute to the development of a more humane world.  Since its inception in 1979, the program has sponsored more than 600 seminars, workshops and conferences, drawing more than 35,000 participants to the University to discuss a wide range of moral, social and cultural issues.  More information>>

Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement
This 28-year-old program has approximately 1,200 participants in 70 classes including history, literature, music, art, drama, natural and social sciences. It is a year-round educational opportunity, divided into 3 sessions, on the Duke University campus. 
When: Three sessions per year, class times vary.

Fearrington Swim & Croquet
The Fearrington Swim and Croquet Club is a beautiful, well-maintained facility located within the village. From May through September, active resident members may enjoy swimming and related activities (pool parties, aquasize, etc.) along with facilities for croquet, horseshoes and shuffleboard. Available memberships include single member, family, renter and a temporary inactive membership.

 

Fearrington Golf Association
One of the most popular groups at Fearrington is the golf association. Members of the golf club have the opportunity to travel to nearly 30 different courses in and around the Triangle area. Many different leagues are available, courses include Raleigh, Pinehurst, Sanford and Southwick. There is an initial fee of $20, and annual dues are $14. Bikers Club
If bicycling down a country road surrounded by friends and neighbors sounds like your idea of fun, this group is for you. While Sunday is the official day for this group's activities, many get together and bike nearly every day. Because the bike rides are non-competitive, anyone with a bike can participate and not be left behind. This group requires very little commitment and is totally free to participate.
When: Sundays at 8:30am in the spring & summer, 9am in the winter.

Fearrington Tennis Association
The association is open to Fearrington residents who are members and their overnight guests, children and grandchildren. Members may play at unscheduled time or may reserve times for themselves or for a group. The initiation fee is $75 and annual dues  are $65 after that. The year begins March 1st, but residents can join at any time. Residents joining after September 1st will pay the initiation fee, but will only pay $32.50 in dues that year.
When: Open tennis Saturday mornings, other unscheduled time is also available

Garden Club
The Fearrington Garden Club is one of the most popular clubs in the village, with approximately 70 members participating. Members get together and plan a variety activities throughout the year in addition to a planned program for each of their meetings. When: September-May, every third Tuesday at 7:30pm. Other activities vary.

 

Marathon Bridge Club
One of Fearrington's largest activity groups, the bridge club divides into teams consisting of 8 pairs each, not necessarily couples, to play their November-June tournament. Each pair will play every other pair once during the tournament for 18 hands of party bridge. The Cost for this club is $18.50 per year, which includes a dinner for all of the players at the end of the season.

Paletteers
Love to paint? you'll be in good company with this informal group of painters from around the Village. Approximately 26 members meet regularly at The Gathering Place at Fearrington to chat, paint, share and critique (if you ask). The group consists of both men and women, at various levels of experience in art. Media include watercolors, pastels and acrylics, and exclude oil paints (due to chemical smells). There is a $30 yearly fee which covers demonstrations by outside artists, space rental, etc.
When: Tuesdays from 1-4pm at The Gathering Place
